“If not Earth, what? If not now, when? If not you, who?” (Amitabh Bacchan)

Heat waves, Melting glaciers, Rising sea level….Climate crisis is the ultimate reality… At present, the effects of global warming may not appear very grave in our day to day lives. But in the years to come, the future generation is sure to face the wrath of climate crisis in an inescapable manner.

The ever increasing greenhouse emissions have resulted in the increase of global temperatures, much more than what is required to keep the Earth warm & habitable.

A report recently released by Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency states China to be the biggest greenhouse gas emitters in the world followed by the United States of America. In India, greenhouse gases emission was 1228 million tones, i.e. 3% of the total global emissions (2006)

Melting glaciers has become a serious issue of concern. The melting of glaciers increase sea levels which in turn will lead to floods, more so in the coastal areas, damaging habitat & killing humans & animals.

As revealed in the documentary, ‘An Inconvenient truth’, the number of hurricanes has increased in the last 30 years. Infact, a large species of animals are already responding to the climate changes by moving to the poles. What is disheartening is that if the trend continues, the world will witness a major catastrophic consequence very soon….

If scientific reports are to be believed, we have just ten more years to avert major destructive changes involving extreme weather conditions, floods & epidemic, killer heat wave & extinction of plant & animal species…

Former vice-president of America, Al Gore along with others, is leaving no stone unturned to make people aware about the serious consequences of global warming.

Infact, in an attempt to tackle this crisis & reduce the greenhouse gases emissions, almost 180 countries have signed the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

A few changes in our lifestyle will go a long way in fighting global warming. Here’s how

- Use CFL instead of regular incandescent light bulb
- Regularly clean & replace the filters of furnace & air conditioners that we use
- Use power saving / energy efficient appliances
- Switch to green power by using renewable sources of energy
- Recycle newspapers, beverage containers, paper and other goods
- Prevent wastage of water
- Prevent frequent use of hot water for bathing & washing purposes
- Turn off & unplug electronics not in use
- Grow more plants in the lawn
- Use of recycled paper products
- Buy organic food as much as possible
- Use fresh food instead of frozen ones
- Reduce the consumption of non-vegetarian food
- Make sure the car is well maintained & tyres are properly inflated
- Take a walk instead of driving your car to nearby places
- Share vehicle (carpool) whenever possible
- Always go for fuel efficient vehicles
- Fly less as air travel produces large amount of emissions
- Use the staircase instead of Lift
- And last but not the least, spread the word among your colleagues & friends

Global warming is not a natural occurrence but a result of human activity. Therefore, every individual owes this responsibility to protect the world from deadly consequences. It doesn’t take much to contribute to the cause, just motivation & the will to stand for it…..

I hoped you would finish this lovely poem in the making. No, I really mean it.
In 'Battlestar Galactica', the humans started for Earth when their 12 colonies were destroyed by the Cylons.

What would the humans do when that the planet they were looking for is polluted and virtually unliveable beyond repair?

Yeah David...I agree that the planet is polluted & beyond repair...but as the saying goes ”Better late than never”.... a lot more things could be done before the planet ceases to exist..... :-)

Thats true..It’s a real grave situation..It seems to me pretty grave now itself..For me the climate is changing drastically in last couple of years..It’s already very much visible..I think the global warming will hit much before it’s anticipated!..It’s very near by to destroy us!..So now or never!..Thanks for bringing up this issue!

Yes Abhi, changes have already set on....just imagine what will it be after 10 years?? We need to take sustainable measures NOW..OR NEVER

Another version of this poem-in-the-making might begin thus:
"If not us, who?
If not us young people, who?
If not the rich countries, who?
If not the big corporations, who?
If not the big organizations, who?
If not the famous people, who?"

Brian, thats nice....Can we think of an online campaign to influence younsters in taking initiaves against global warming??? I mean in their own little ways...

The good news is there are a lot many people today who are aware of the climate changes and global warming and are doing their bit within their individual capacity.
The bad new is, its too little and too late if we depend only on individual efforts.
Corporates and governments are talking and trying to make policies but are they serious? 2008 till 2012 are important years to see if Kyoto was really effective, but with US not being a part of it, will 2012 be too late if things did not work out?
Our planet is already hotter by 0.8 deg C since industrial revolution and its hotting up at much faster rate now than before.
But if you look around at the awareness and efforts that have been initiated, there is hope that we may be able to avert the worst at least for now.

Well Manish, I agree to your point that only individual efforts won’t help much...But you see, government officials & corporates are taking action & this is something beyond our control...so the point raised is that rather than depending only on the govt,. to do something, we should consciously do what we can at an individual level...& I guess a lot of people are actually doing..But this lot doesnt involve all....

Don’t you think, if EVERY SINGLE individual of this world does his bit, the total results will definitely make some remarkable changes

For e.g If every family in the U.S. made the switch to CFL, 90 billion pounds of carbon dioxide can be reduced...& if the whole world does it, just imagine what would be the impact....These liitle nothings are actually very important...

Don’t get me wrong. I do believe in power of individuals and each one of us who is already doing something, even in a small way, should continue to do so and also make others realize the gravity of the situation. But my point is - how can we make EVERY SINGLE individual on this world do their bit in a very limited finite amount of time.
Got any idea to share?

Exactly Manish, how to persuade every single individual is the question. I believe the efforts need to be localized & not globalized....every city, town & state should be targeted in all the countries....Opinion leaders & educated community members should strive to influence people....

& as far as yyounsters are concerned, I feel any form of campaign will definitely help..Infact I really want to discuss with people about a massive campaign that we can launch to young minds...Any ideas???
